Esmeralda racing as fast as her heart could take it. Despite having a hood over her head the daylight still bothered her, after all, she wasn’t used to the sun’s rays. In her entire life she had never seen the outside of that damn cult house.

Soon after her birth Esmeralda was given by her mother to the cult in which she participated, and since then she has never been able to live her own life, she has always been in the hands of the priests, the seers, the charlatans! They always used her for their rituals, claiming that the girl was pure, as she had never tasted of the filth that existed beyond the sect’s walls.

But in addition to using the girl as an idol, they also promised her as the priest’s lover. It was said that she had been chosen to conceive a child who bore him, an ugly old man, full of warts and bad breath.

When Esmeralda found out she was pregnant she tried to hide from the sect, but as soon as her belly grew a little she found herself cornered, everyone treated her well when she was in one of the rituals, but when the faithful weren’t around, she was just a captive.

On the day she gave birth the prophecy was broken because twins were born, a boy and a girl. But only one should have been born, a boy, according to the prophecy, he should take the father’s place.

Some silly story was invented to justify the seer’s error, but the faithful began to doubt the cult’s beliefs, and the blame was laid on Esmeralda, who was soon pointed out as a heretic, as the cause of eternal punishment for all of the sect. All the faithful asked that something should be done to restore order: Esmeralda and her children should die. That’s when she decided to run… and run.

Esmeralda somehow managed to escape through the front door, running like she didn’t even know she could, covered in a brown blanket, with a hood over her head and her children in her arms.

When the cult people realized who was leaving the sect was Esmeralda, some of the helpers ran after her, but it seemed impossible to reach her, so fast was she going.

Esmeralda stopped running just because her heart stopped beating. As she rolled on the ground, still driven by the run, her children in her arms were being hit from all sides, being bruised, squished.

Despite being day, there were no people there to help Esmeralda. The sect was set back on a farm, and the first people who came near it took care to examine the twins. Only the girl was alive. For a short time.
